Since living on Kauai, we had talked to Grandma on the phone a couple of times. After a few calls, we found out that Chino had been staying with her. Come to find out, she and Loyd had been the ones who had helped him hide at the beginning. When they went up on that mountain trip they took him with them, and then kept him up there once they returned home. It was only after we had moved that they went to go get him.
Acting like the teenager he was, Grandma was getting fed up with Chino’s antics. After being away for nearly a year he was ready to come back home. So arrangements were made and he came to live with us on Kauai.
As you can imagine, I was really happy to have my best friend back. He was a year older from the time we last saw him, and had been given the freedom to experience life away from Mom.
The two of us started to hang out a lot again. He didn’t like the “Buddhist thing”, but thought Allen was somewhat cool. The three of us would sometimes go places, and thus was my ticket to Nightmare 3! Allen also took us to an empty air strip where we got to drive his fire truck.
It only took a couple of days after Chino had arrived for friction to start back up. Mom started to thump away on one of us, and like a superhero Chino came in and said, “Nah-uh. That’s gonna stop! You’re not gonna be beating on my siblings anymore! If you wanna fight, here I am!”
I’ll never forget Mom’s response. “Oh, r-e-a-l-l-y?!” They then started to scuffle a bit before breaking apart. She was finally getting a taste of her own medicine.
